Is Kratom Positive or Negative for Bodybuilding?

August 5th, 2025GeneralNo Comments »

The potential benefits of kratom, such as energy boost and mood uplift, may make it a good pre-workout for achieving your bodybuilding goals. But kratom can be habit-forming, especially when used regularly and at high doses, which calls for caution.

What Is Kratom and Why the Hype?

Kratom is a Southeast Asian plant that has gained enormous recognition in Western countries. Locals traditionally used the leaves of this plant to enhance wellness and improve general well-being. But as more and more people get involved in kratom, different claims and misinformation about this amazing herb have been flying around.

Our focus in this article is on kratom and bodybuilding. Is bodybuilding part of the potential benefits of kratom? Stay with us as we address all issues related to this topic.

Does Kratom Help You Grow Muscles?

No, kratom in itself does not help in building muscles, but it could play a part in helping you achieve your bodybuilding goals. To help you understand this subject better, let’s start by listing out the potential benefits of kratom:

  • Energy boosts
  • Mood uplift
  • Improves mental focus
  • Promotes calmness and relaxation
  • Provides ease to discomfort
  • Makes you sociable
  • Reduces worries

Going through the potential benefits above, you can see that there’s nothing like building muscle mass. But on a closer look, you can pick out some potential benefits that could impact your bodybuilding journey.

Potential benefits like energy boosts, mood uplift, and mental focus can push you to the limit you need to be to achieve your goal. Also, benefits like relief from discomfort can help post-workout. Putting all these together, we can say that kratom indirectly helps with bodybuilding, but it is never a bodybuilding product.

This misinformation about kratom and bodybuilding, coming from fitness vendors, needs to be rebuked. As a trusted and reliable vendor who is part of the kratom community, it is our responsibility to pass on accurate information about kratom.

Also, while vendors are talking about the potential benefits of kratom, we should never forget the other side of it. Kratom can be very instrumental to your wellness if you use it responsibly: take the lowest effective dose, take breaks, and buy from trusted vendors who are members of cGMP. But there are side effects to overusing kratom, as it can be habit-forming and may cause discomfort to some users. Some are even saying kratom can be responsible for low testosterone levels. How true could that be? We’ll clarify this claim as you read on.

Note: Kratom has different strains, and each strain tends to have unique effects. For example, red strains tilt towards offering ease and relaxation, white strains are for energy boosts, while green is a balance of both white and red.

Best Strains of Kratom for Gym Use

We’ve clarified that kratom does not directly help in building muscles but can be a pre-workout considering its potential benefits. Since there are different strains of kratom, which one is best for gym use?

Energy and focus are the two potential benefits that make kratom useful in the gym. White and green strains are generally known for these effects. Below are our top 5 recommendations for best strains of kratom for gym use:

  • White Maeng Da: Offers good energy and focus
  • White Thai: Gives you physical drive and boosts alertness
  • Green Maeng Da: More of a balanced energy and endurance
  • White Borneo: Enhances stamina and uplifts your mood
  • Green Malay: Can be used both in the gym and after a workout as it offers smooth energy with mild ease for recovery

For post-workout, reds are usually the go-to strains as they support muscle ease, recovery, and relaxation. Some good ones are red Maeng Da, red Bali, and green Malay.

Are There Any Links Between Kratom and Testosterone?

You may have come across discussions in kratom communities where some users report low testosterone after using kratom for a while. Could this be true? Let’s look at what studies say.

A study was carried out to investigate testosterone levels in kratom users after long-term use. Blood samples were taken from 19 regular kratom users and tested. The results showed that kratom use was not associated with lower testosterone in humans. However, the daily dose participants used in the study was 76.23–94.15 mg, which is considerably lower than the average dose of most users.

Yet another study was carried out to investigate the impact of kratom on sexual health. 156 kratom users participated, and the results showed more positives than negatives on sexual health. But for testosterone levels in particular, only 3 users (1.9%) reported a diagnosis of low testosterone after using kratom.

Dosage: <1g, 1–3g, 3–5g, >5g
Frequency of use: less than weekly, less than once a day but at least weekly, once daily, twice daily, three or more times daily

Therefore, it shows that it is unlikely that kratom is associated with low testosterone, but it can’t be ruled out completely.

It Is Not All Rosy: Potential Risks You Should Beware Of

Kratom is a great herb with the potential to improve wellness, but you don’t want to throw caution to the wind when using it. There are potential risks associated with kratom, and the two likely triggers are taking high doses and using it without breaks.

Kratom can be habit-forming when you use it regularly. You can also develop tolerance for it, and that could cause you to increase your dosage. These side effects are not a good thing, and you’d want to be aware of them.

Another issue to be aware of is that the market is flooded with contaminated or adulterated products. Some vendors are not so honest with their products, which is a big concern for the industry. To avoid these bogus vendors, we always recommend that you buy kratom products from vendors who are members of the AKA GMP Standards Program.

Lastly, kratom’s effects may vary from user to user. What works best for you may not work the same way for me. Therefore, the best way to find the perfect strain for your needs is by experimenting with different strains starting with low doses.

Wrapping It Up: Kratom is Great, But There Is a Lot Of Misinformation Out There

The motivation and energy you get from kratom could be a short-term gain for bodybuilding, but the long-term effect may ruin your goal. There is a lot of misinformation from fitness influencers pushing kratom as a bodybuilder. But that information is not backed by any scientific study, which calls for caution.

Only use kratom because it has potential wellness benefits and not because you want to build muscles. There are potential side effects associated with this herb if overused and if used frequently. These side effects could eventually ruin your goals and leave you in a worse state than where you started.

Be responsible with kratom by not overusing it, and take your time to research facts about the herb to avoid falling for bogus claims from influencers. There are so many flashy kratom beverages being marketed for wellness, but some vendors are not genuine with their claims. Always buy your products from trusted and reliable vendors who have built solid reputations over the years.
