Traveling with kratom to Egypt can be intimidating because there’s a lack of information about its legality in the country. Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries have harsh regulations on controlled substances. And because kratom is not allowed in some countries due to its potential to be abused, it is important to know Egypt’s stance on kratom before bringing or buying kratom in the country.
Kratom and its active alkaloids are not listed under Egypt’s National Control Schedule (I) of Anti Narcotics Law. With this, we can say that kratom is technically legal in Egypt.
Again, from a document shared in 2022 from the Commision on Narcotic Drugs, it shows no mention of kratom or its alkaloids listed as controlled substances. Kratom nor its primary alkaloids are included as scheduled substances in the 1960 Egyptian Anti-Narcotics Law 182. This shows that kratom is either not well-known in Egypt or the government is not currently interested in regulating or banning it.
With this said, not having kratom on the list of controlled substances in Egypt may not entirely mean you are in the clear. Yes, you would have a strong legal argument by showing it is not banned under law, but still, Egypt is known to be very strict with psychotropic substances. With this information, we can say that kratom is technically legal, but it falls into a legal gray area that is not without risk of scrutiny or penalties.
Since kratom is not a controlled substance and the government of Egypt does not list kratom as scheduled substance, traveling with it does not break the law, but that isn’t to say this does not carry risks. We are talking about a country whose stance on psychoactive substances is very strict, and since kratom falls into this area, it does merritt cause for concern.
The truth is, Egyptian customs and law enforcement know very little to nothing about kratom. If you decide to carry kratom into the country, there is a chance that it won’t be a concern for them. However, if they find it with you, they may ask you a few questions about it, and possibly decide to arrest you if they are suspicious.
In terms of Egypt’s legal system, their constitution has been set-up to reduce political influence. However there have been concerns of human rights violations through the judicial system.
With this information, it is best to NOT bring kratom to Egypt even though it is technically legal. The risks of potential consequences certainly outweigh any positives. And with the potential of not having a right to fair trial, this increases the risk.
While kratom is currently not a banned substance in Egypt, their laws are known to be very strict and there have been criticism about the fairness of their judicial system. With a potentially unfair legal system, it means you may not be allowed to fairly defend yourself if a case if it is brought against you.
It is important to remember this country has a different legal system than Western countries and that having the right to fairly defend yourself, may potentially be off the table.
Kratom is technically legal in Egypt because it is not listed as a controlled substance. However, it may still be questioned and charged by Egyptian authorities if they see fit.
You could technically since it is legal, however, being a psychotropic substance it could face scrutiny and if a charge is brought against you, concerns over a fair trial do exist. With these facts, it is best not to travel with kratom to Egypt even if it is legal under their laws.
