Distinguished by its’ aroma that typically leans slower within the red-veined category, Red Hulu Kapuas has gained popularity as a mid-spectrum red strain. Native to Indonesia’s Hulu Kapuas region, this variety developed along the mineral-rich banks of one of the country’s most prominent rivers.

Where Does Hulu Kapuas Kratom Come From?

A significant amount of the world’s kratom supply comes from Indonesia, which is why many of the country’s native strains, such as Indo, Bali, Borneo and Sumatra, dominate the market. Similarly, the Hulu Kapuas strain is native to Indonesia but is less well-known than many of the countries hallmark strains.

The Hulu strain gets its name from the Kapuas River which spans over 710 miles. Many areas near the river are remotely uninhabited with dense tropical canopy, and fertile alluvial soil, creating conditions for kratom tree growth. Along the riverbanks of the Kapuas, the Hulu strain has access to rich, fertile soil and humid conditions that impact alkaloid development.

There are 3 color varieties of the Hulu strain, which inherit their color names from the vein colors of the leaves upon harvest. White Hulu leaves are harvested the earliest, followed by the green and red varieties of the strain. Red leaves typically contain the slowest aroma of the three, which is a result of a differing alkaloid profile impacted by leaf harvesting time. Red leaves are usually partially sun-dried whereas green and White Hulu varieties are typically dried indoors, which may further impact the alkaloid profile.
