Making Kratom Extract At Home – DIY Guide

There are many ways to take kratom. You can take it straight as powder and down it with water. You can take your time to brew a nice cup of kratom tea.

Mainly for its storing benefits and improved strengths, kratom users are also now looking into how to make kratom extract.

What are they exactly? What extraction process should you use? What are the best practices to get an effective yield? Let’s find out.

What Are Kratom Extracts?

Kratom extracts are concentrated kratom. The extraction process aims to separate the kratom alkaloids from the plant matter to enhance the effects unique to its strain.

The strength difference between kratom powder or leaves and extract starts from twice as strong to a hundred times stronger. You will see the extract labeled as such if you decide to get it from kratom vendors.

3 Types of Kratom Extract

There are three types of kratom extract:

  • Extract powder – a dark-colored powder with a distinctly strong smell
  • Extract resin – a hard candy-like form, perfect for brewing tea
  • Extract tincture – kratom in concentrated liquid form

Based on these three types, we have three methods of making kratom extract, which you can modify according to your taste and preference.

3 DIY Kratom Extraction Methods

The results may vary depending on how you want to store the kratom extract, but these three methods follow the same principle.

Each starts with separating the alkaloids from the rest of the kratom powder or leaves, which you achieve by boiling them in water and reducing them to a thicker consistency.

Method 1: How to Make Kratom Extract Powder

Ingredients

  • 200 grams of fresh kratom powder
  • Water (enough to cover the kratom)
  • Lemon or citric acid

Materials

  • Kitchen pot
  • Cheesecloth
  • Baking dish
  • Coffee grinder
  • Container or capsules to store

Directions

Part 1: Extract the kratom alkaloids.
  1. Mix 200 grams of kratom and water in the pot.
  2. Add lemon or citric acid.
  3. Heat the mixture to a simmer for 30 minutes and stir occasionally.
  4. Reduce heat when needed to keep it from boiling.
  5. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool.
  6. Strain it using a cheesecloth, squeezing all the liquid from the kratom powder.
  7. Clean the pot of all the kratom powder.
Part 2: Reduce the liquid.
  1. Put the strained liquid back into the pot.
  2. Heat it to a simmer again until it turns into a dark liquid with the consistency of syrup.
  3. Turn the heat off.
  4. Transfer the thick liquid to the baking dish.
Part 3: Solidify your resin.
  1. Put it inside the oven on low heat for 5-10 minutes to remove the moisture.
  2. Take it out of the oven and let it cool.
  3. Once it solidifies, scrape the resin off to collect.
Part 4: Grind and store your powder.
  1. Use your coffee grinder to make your fine kratom powder extract.
  2. Store in a jar or package into capsules for easy use.

Method 2: How to Make Kratom Extract Resin

Kratom extract resin is solidified kratom concentrate that’s usually dark brown or black. It’s convenient to use when brewing hot kratom tea or to concoct a cold refreshment on a warm day.

Most of the ingredients, materials, and steps we will follow here are what we have in the kratom extract powder method above. The only difference is the last step.

Ingredients

  • 200 grams of fresh kratom powder
  • Water (enough to cover the kratom)
  • Lemon

Materials

  • Kitchen pot
  • Cheesecloth
  • Baking dish
  • Knife
  • Container to store resin

Directions

Follow parts 1 to 3 of preparing kratom extract powder. Now that you have your solidified kratom extract resin, proceed with these steps:

  1. Slice resin into rectangles. Ideally, the size should be that of regular candy.
  2. Store in a jar with a secure lid.

Method 3: How to Make Kratom Extract Tincture

Not only is kratom extract tincture stronger and fast-acting. It is also sought-after for its portability, versatility, and pleasant taste compared to kratom powder or crushed kratom leaves.

Because it’s a concentrate, a few drops of the kratom tincture can give you the soothing or energy-boosting effects you’re looking for. You can easily mix it into a beverage, add it to your baking ingredients, or directly take it on the go.

The following method is an alcohol mixture, which preserves the tincture much longer than a water-based extract.

Ingredients

  1. 100 grams of kratom powder
  2. 400 ml of drinking alcohol (at least 80 proof, such as vodka or rum)
  3. Lemon juice or citric acid

Materials

  1. Digital scale
  2. pH strips
  3. Jar with a tight lid
  4. Bottles or jars for storage
  5. Cheesecloth

Directions

  1. Mix 100 grams of kratom powder and 500 ml of alcohol in a jar.
  2. Add lemon juice or citric acid gradually, and with the use of the pH strips, aim for pH 4.
  3. Seal the jar and shake the kratom mixture.
  4. Leave the jar in a cool area for seven days.
  5. Strain using a cheesecloth, squeezing all the liquid out.
  6. Put the liquid in a jar.
  7. Wait until half of it has evaporated.
  8. Put your reduced liquid in a tinted bottle to lengthen its shelf life.

Pro Tips for Making Kratom Extract at Home

1. Use tinted bottles or jars.

Knowing how to store kratom properly is essential to master making quality kratom extract. Protecting it from light extends its shelf life and preserves its potency.

If you are making extracts as a tincture, store them using tinted kratom tincture bottles or jars. You can also get creative and personalize your own kratom tincture bottle.

2. Don’t boil your kratom.

In any method of preparation — whether brewing tea from crushed kratom leaf or extraction — you should avoid boiling your kratom. High temperatures can damage the alkaloids responsible for kratom’s effects.

3. Add only enough lemon juice or citric acid.

As an optional step, you can add lemon juice, lime juice, or citric acid to kratom extract using any method discussed. One thing to remember, though, is to add it gradually. You don’t want to make your kratom too acidic, making it unpleasant or impossible to consume. Using a pH strip helps keep the pH levels in check.
